About Dough Dog

We didn't set out to build subscription software. A customer built it, and we saw what it was worth.

Dough Dog is the Shopify subscription platform built for apparel. Rotating curated Selections, matching subscriptions for siblings and couples, and real-time variant-level inventory. Three things no general-purpose subscription app was built to do.

The origin

Most software starts with a founder and a hunch. Ours started with a bill.

A U.S. apparel brand had been running a rotating subscription program for about ten years. Not subscribe-and-save the same thing every month. Real rotation: a different curated piece each cycle, picked for each subscriber based on what they liked, what they'd already received, and what was actually in stock.

No subscription platform on Shopify did that. So the brand cobbled it together. They ran a subscription vendor for the billing layer, for a tool that did maybe 65% of what they actually needed. Then they spent over half a million dollars a year on engineers to build the other 35%: the curation logic, the rotation rules, the inventory checks that kept them from charging a customer for a size they'd already sold out of.

Over half a million dollars a year, on top of vendor fees, to run a subscription program that no vendor could sell them off the shelf.

After a decade of that math, they decided to stop renting a solution that didn't fit and build the real thing.

From internal tool to platform

Building the thing for one brand was the easy half.

By about eight months in, the software mostly worked. It ran a real program, for real subscribers, at real volume. But it was still shaped like one brand's internal tool: assumptions about their catalog, their sizes, their drop calendar, baked in everywhere. Useful to exactly one company.

The harder problem was the one Dough Dog exists to solve. Take a system that took a decade and a specific set of scars to build, and make it something any apparel brand can install and run in an afternoon.

Anyone can copy a feature list. What nobody can copy is the hundred small operational decisions underneath it. How to commit a variant before the charge runs. What to do when a subscriber returns the piece you just curated for them. How to ship two matching items in different sizes as a single order without breaking fulfillment. That accumulated knowledge is the actual product. Everything since has been about packaging it, so a brand doesn't have to spend ten years and half a million dollars a year learning it the hard way.

Who builds it

Dough Dog is built by ecommerce operators, not by a team that read about subscriptions in a deck.

The company is led by David Hardwick, who joined the build as product lead and CTO and now serves as CEO.

Who we're for

Dough Dog is built for DTC apparel brands on Shopify, roughly $10M to $400M in revenue, where customers come back for variety rather than replenishment. If your subscribers want the next print, the next drop, the next piece, not the same item on repeat, you're who we built this for.

Sock brands. Underwear and intimates. T-shirt and print-heavy brands. Pajamas and loungewear. Kids apparel where siblings want matching sets. And adjacent categories with the same rhythm: puzzle brands, candle brands, anyone whose catalog rotates and whose customers return for something new.

A few of the brands running Dough Dog today: Caden Lane, whose subscription program went from zero to six figures a month by month three, Eby (intimates), and Viasox (socks).

The three things only we do

Rotating, curated Selections

Every cycle, every subscriber gets a piece picked from your live catalog based on their preferences and purchase history. Real curation, not a preset sequence in a new wrapper.

Matching subscriptions

The same print across siblings, couples, or a whole family, each in their correct size, shipped together on one billing. No other Shopify subscription platform does this.

Real-time variant inventory

Every assignment is checked against live stock before the charge runs. The exact size and color a subscriber is promised is the one that ships. No substitutions, no post-charge apologies.

How we charge
1% of subscription revenue + 19¢ per transaction. No monthly fee.

The industry norm is a fixed monthly subscription tax on top of a percentage cut. That model was built for high-margin CPG, not for apparel running on 50–60% gross margins. We only make money when your subscription program does. Aligned incentives, by design.
